The purpose of the article is to explore how rational calculus, institutions and logic of appropriateness determine the crime in Mexico. Methodology is double: on one hand, a rational choice model is designed for assessing the conditions that favor crime´s preference and its profitability. The result is that institutions play a crucial role by affecting the grade of impunity. This role can be known only empirically. On the other hand, three regression model on crime rate are estimated. Results endorse both, rational calculus, and logic of appropriateness, affect the expansion of crime, though that influence depends on the level of education, the perception of government corruption, and the safeness feeling.
